I didn’t ask her about Robert. She’d already apologized profusely for her proposal a number of times, but I didn’t press for any details about him. I didn’t want to know, didn’t want anything to fracture the joy of having her back in my life. She said that she’d already moved out and into a new place, that after the day in my office, she knew she’d made a terrible mistake and wanted nothing to do with him since he’d become a constant reminder of why I was no longer in her life. She swore that she’d been trying to be kinky, that there was nothing else behind her insane suggestion. She had absolutely no desire to be with men. From her enthusiasm with me in bed, I believed her, but I felt the need to remind her often that I was not going to put up with any more of her shit.

“If you want this,” I reinforced more than once, “then you’ve got to have it, period. No more others.” She swore up and down that she was all in.

Looking back, I can’t believe how much I put up with from her. She grew into such a glorious person, but she wasn’t always that way. She was human, and I would never fault her for that. And in the end, all the waiting, all the mental torture, was worth it a million times over.
